Experiential Learning Project

We are working with a diverse group of schools, organizations, instructors, and students to design and create openly licensed experiential learning components for online general education courses.

Discovering New Experiences

To support our mission, and to encourage ongoing innovation in online learning, TEL is launching its Experiential Learning Project. Through the Experiential Learning Project, we will work with a diverse set of schools and institutions, instructors, and students to design and create openly licensed experiential learning modules for online general education courses.

Vision

To create affordable online education that promotes learner agency and leads to demonstrable mastery in specific subject domains.

Mission

Work with stakeholders to create open experiential learning content for online GenEd courses.

Serving Diverse Communities

With communities in mind, this framework is designed to be adaptable to diverse student bodies and diverse school/institution models, including fully online and blended learning.

High School Students

  • High school students working in cohorts and group environments as part of their dual-credit courses
  • High school students working independently with limited school supervision or guidance

Schools

  •  Inner-city public schools
  • Rural public schools
  • Charter schools
  • Private schools
  • Homeschool co-ops
  • Education organizations

Home School Students

  • Home school students working with adult supervision
  • Home school students participating in co-op environments
  • Homeschool students working independently with limited school supervision or guidance

Designing the Framework

TEL’s experiential learning framework allows educators to integrate real-life participation models found outside of the classroom with traditional general education courses. Our modules are designed to let students work individually or collaboratively on real-world projects, to demonstrate subject/skill mastery gained through their participation, and to have a genuine impact in their local communities.

In order to have the broadest impact possible, and to provide equitable access to un(der)served populations, we are designing an experiential learning framework that:

Z

Encourages individual learner agency

Z

Emphasizes constructed knowledge over information memorization.

Z

Promotes centrifugal learning by pushing student exploration outside of the “classroom”

Z

Connects students to real-world applications of learning in their local communities

Z

Provides project and learning choices that allow for student individualization based on interests and skills

Z

Supports varying levels of online connectivity and provides access to both digital and print versions of module materials

Project Milestones

Over the course of the next six months, TEL is committed to achieving great things with the Experiential Learning Project. Check out our upcoming milestones on the timeline below!

September-December 2019

Host an inaugural Experiential Learning Conference, experienceED, in Oklahoma City.

Conduct initial testing of course modules with a small set of students and schools.

Conduct focus groups with schools and students to collect additional feedback related to the potential learning efficacy of our module design.

January-May 2020

Launch full pilot of the three courses with a broad and diverse set of schools and users

Publish research findings from the pilot semester and host webinars in February and April/May to discuss the findings with participating schools.
